INEC Lists Nnaji For Enugu Governorship Despite Pending Forgery Trial

Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has been listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State for the 2027 election, despite a pending criminal case over alleged certificate forgery.

INEC released its final list of governorship candidates on October 11, 2026, ahead of the February 6, 2027 governorship election.

Nnaji is facing a six-count charge filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations bordering on certificate forgery, giving false information, abuse of office and money laundering.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja in July 2026.

The controversy surrounding Nnaji’s academic credentials followed claims that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), disowned a Bachelor of Science certificate attributed to him, reportedly stating that he did not graduate from the institution.

Nnaji subsequently resigned as minister following the allegations over his academic qualifications.

His appearance on the INEC list has raised questions about his candidacy while the criminal case remains pending in court.

Nnaji is also said to be associated with the Rainbow movement championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
