FAAN To Close Owerri Airport Runway For 25 Days For Repairs, Expansion

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for about 25 days to undertake repairs, resurfacing and extension works.

The proposed closure was announced in a statement issued by FAAN’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, Henry Agbebire, and published on the authority’s official X account.

FAAN said the shutdown is tentatively expected to commence on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation, with the work scheduled to last approximately 25 days.

The Authority attributed the planned closure to the deteriorating state of parts of the runway, noting that prolonged wear and recent heavy rainfall had worsened the damage and raised safety concerns.

“The planned intervention has become necessary due to the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracking, which have been further aggravated by recent heavy rainfall,” the authority stated.

According to FAAN, the rehabilitation will cover repairs to damaged pavement, treatment of cracks and resurfacing of affected areas to improve safety ahead of the expected rise in air traffic during the Christmas period.

The project will also involve extending the runway to allow it to accommodate wide-body aircraft as demand for air travel to the South-East continues to grow.

“These repairs will also include the extension of the runway, which will enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region grows. This expansion is aimed at improving passenger comfort and facilitating a more seamless travel experience,” FAAN said.

The proposed upgrade is expected to strengthen the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft and support growing passenger numbers in the region.

FAAN urged travellers scheduled to fly through Owerri during the closure period to contact their airlines for information on flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.

The Authority said it would announce the confirmed dates for the shutdown and reopening after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
