2026 World Teachers’ Day: Gov Yusuf Reaffirms Commitment To Teachers’ Welfare

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare, professional development and working conditions to strengthen the state’s education sector.

Yusuf stated this in his message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Future.”

The celebration was held at the Coronation Hall in Kano government house and was attended by education stakeholders, with the Secretary to the State Government representing the governor.

Yusuf said teachers remained the foundation of every profession and played a critical role in shaping society, stressing that supporting them should go beyond annual celebrations to include adequate training, teaching resources, infrastructure, fair remuneration and career progression.

He said his administration had recruited more than 16,000 teachers since assuming office, including 8,588 employed in July 2026, comprising 4,900 newly recruited and trained teachers and 3,688 ABBA Gida-Gida BESDA teachers.

The governor added that the recruitment drive was complemented by investments in school infrastructure, furniture, teaching materials and continuous professional development, noting that education had consistently received the largest share of the state’s budget.

He commended them for their dedication, which he said contributed to the state’s performance in the National Examinations Council examinations where the the state emerged as the best-performing state for two consecutive years.

“In the 2026 results, Kano recorded 74,413 candidates with at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, ahead of Lagos and Oyo,”, he noted.

He also encouraged teachers to embrace technology, innovation and modern teaching methods while maintaining the human values essential to education.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Baffa Garko, commended the governor for prioritising teachers’ welfare and professional development.

Garko specifically praised the government for recruiting additional teachers, prompt payment of salaries, approval of the N71,000 minimum wage, continuous training and timely promotion of teachers.
