WHO Commends Gov Yusuf For Bridging Health Manpower Gap

The World Health Organisation has commended the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, for his efforts to address the shortage of human resources in the state’s health sector.

The WHO Representative in Kano, Dr Sunusi Mayana, gave the commendation during the official presentation of appointment letters to 2,037 newly recruited clinical and non-clinical health personnel at the Kano Government House.

Mayana said the recruitment demonstrated the governor’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery and addressing critical manpower gaps in the sector.

He said the intervention would have a direct impact on families across the state, stressing that development partners were not in competition with the government but were committed to supporting the implementation of its programmes and policies.

The WHO representative also commended the state government for working through established systems and institutions, noting that sustainable development required building structures capable of delivering results beyond the tenure of any administration.

Similarly, the UNICEF Representative in Kano, Dr Muhammadu Damish, praised the government for investing in human resources and strengthening the state’s healthcare system.

He described the recruitment as an important step towards improving access to quality healthcare services across the state.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association in Kano also commended Yusuf for upgrading primary healthcare facilities and major secondary healthcare institutions.

He said the upgrading of facilities, including Muhammad Buhari Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Hospital, would enhance medical training, residency programmes and specialised healthcare services.

The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Medical and Health Workers Union and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria also commended the reforms, describing them as investments in the future of healthcare delivery in the state.

They urged the government to sustain the momentum and continue supporting initiatives aimed at expanding healthcare opportunities and improving service delivery.

The development partners reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration with the state government to consolidate the gains recorded in the health sector.
